How to Write a Video Script

Writing a video script can be helpful as a videographer in keeping organized, displaying your creative vision to a client, and making sure you don't miss a shot when on set. Don't let writing videography scripts keep you from having fun doing what you love!

Why should you even create a video script?

No missed shots during complex shoots (multi day shoots, weddings, etc)

Gives you clarity and peace of mind when going on sete

Peace of mind for the client, especially if its their first video

The main things I include in a creative brief (or the preface of the script) are listed below. This helps anyone that picks the script up to understand the situation and context of the video before reading the concept.

Creative Brief includes:

  1. GOALs

  2. OUTCOMES

  3. OBJECTIVES

  4. PLACEMENTS

  5. FEEL or FLOW

  6. DURATION

  7. DIFFERENCIATORS

Basic script template elements include

  1. SCENE

  2. TIMESTAMP

  3. AUDIO

  4. VISUAL

  5. DIRECTOR'S NOTES

For a full explaination of all of these points, watch the video linked above.
